St.George’s church, West Grinstead, achieved an outstanding success at the patronal week-end celebrations, thanks largely to wonderful weather on the Saturday. The theme of the flower displays was taken from the nursery rhyme ‘Oranges and Lemons’ and the arrangements were done by members of St.George’s congregation, Partridge Green W.I. and The Partridge Green Horticultural Society. Paintings by Sussex artists were for sale, a large produce stall selling local cakes, jams and plants contributed to the financial total, as did a very successful Silent Auction which included luxury holiday accommodation in Madeira. Local and visiting bell-ringers rang the tower bells and hand bells throughout the week-end, the Band Captain, Mr. Richard Verrall, generously giving instruction to some young aspirants.
On the Saturday afternoon the children of Jolesfield school gave a spirited rendering of the medieval ‘mummers’ play of St.George and the Dragon, a most fitting contribution to celebrating the church’s patron saint, and a hard-working refreshment tent and BBQ not only helped swell the coffers but also assuaged the thirst of the young dancers.
Over £5,500 was raised, and the numbered Lucky Programme prize – a superb hamper of wine and food – was won by a local resident.
